Solo travelling is empowering, and it certainly is on every woman’s wish list. It fills you with a great sense of purpose and independence and is one of the most fulfilling me-time activities you can indulge in. After all, when you’re travelling alone, you’re not answerable to anyone nor are you expected to match anyone else’s expectations from the trip. And this provides you with that much-needed freedom to explore places at your own pace.

However inspiring though it might seem, solo travelling for women poses quite a bit of challenges. With safety being one of the oft-quoted reasons for many women choosing not to take a relaxing solo vacation. But it’s an experience no one should give up on. While you might want to explore the nook and cranny of our county, for a novice it’s sensible to explore some relatively safe destinations that are women-friendly and easy to navigate. So, here’s our list of the three safest destinations in India that you could visit to indulge your wanderlust.

Sikkim

Considered one of the safest places in India for solo women travellers, Sikkim with its scenic misty mountains and gurgling waters is a true paradise. From adventure enthusiasts to those yearning for a quaint, relaxing holiday among the hills and rolling clouds, Sikkim has a lot to offer for all kinds of solo women travellers. But whether it’s a quiet solo holiday or an activity filled one that you crave, a trek to catch the magnificent Himalayas should certainly be on your bucket list. Since Sikkim is quite big and might need some long treks, plan your itinerary and get the necessary permits (to visit the Indo-China border) in advance to save time. If you’re up for it, you could cover many places in a week, but if you’re time-strapped just pick a few around Gangtok.

Places to visit in Sikkim: If you’re up for a trek visit the Gurudongmar Lake, the highest lake in the world and in India, or experience the jaw-dropping natural beauty of Lachung. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary in Yumthang Valley, which is also known as the ‘Valley of Flowers’, is also considered a must visit spot. Some other places to explore include Chopta Valley, Green Lake, Lachen Monastery and the Kanchenjunga National Park.

Best time to visit: March to May and from October to mid-December when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

What to pack: Pack your woollens but layering works better as certain places can get warmer. Denim jackets, cardigans, tees, scarves to cover your neck, a large tote bag or even a backpack, minimal jewellery, like huggies and threader earrings and dainty layered necklaces, sunglasses and practical shoes for long walks.

Pondicherry

A charming city in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, known for its French influence and architecture, is one of the safest places to visit for solo women travellers. A city that still carries its French legacy (the street names in White Town are still in French!), most of Pondicherry can be covered by walk, since the majority of the touristy spots are in and around the popular rock beach.

Places to visit in Pondicherry: Take a boat ride to Paradise beach, or visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, or the Serenity Beach. Pondicherry also has some nice churches and temples (if you’re planning a visit). The city offers the best culinary experience and there’s something to suit every taste bud. Street shopping to chic couture boutiques, handicraft outlets, cane and wood furniture, stone jewellery, handmade paper to bags and fabrics, Pondicherry offers a wide range of options for every shopping enthusiast.

Best time to visit: October to March is the peak tourist season.

What to pack: Shorts, swimwear, cover-ups, linen trousers, tanks tops, tees, summer dresses, something dressy for the evening, macrame sling bags, flips-flops, and definitely your sunglasses and SPF.

Lavasa, Maharashtra

India’s first planned hill station, Lavasa, inspired by the Italian town of Portofino, is located about 65 kms from Pune. A posh, quaint city with breathtaking views of the western ghats and surrounded by lakes, Lavasa offers some luxurious accommodation options that will make for an ideal weekend solo trip to relax, rewind and enjoy some quality me-time.

Places to visit in Lavasa: From the Tikona fort to the Devkund Waterfalls nestled amidst dense forests, to the mesmerising Tamhini Ghat, the city has many trails for nature lovers.

Best time to visit: Between October to March when the place is cool and pleasant.

What to pack: Cocktail dresses to visit some upscale restaurants, jackets and scarfs to layer up for your treks, statement jewellery pieces for your night outs, jumpsuits for your nature walks, lightweight linen and georgette dresses for your shopping sprees.

Travelling solo is all about being extra prepared and alert. That doesn’t necessarily mean you cannot enjoy your solo holiday. Just research the location, follow local regulations and make sure you share your itinerary with your family and friends back home. And most important of all, just avoid isolated places and venturing out in the dark. A relaxed solo trip is rejuvenating, and every girl should do it once in a while. So, when you think it’s time to enjoy your own company, just go ahead and pack your bags and head out!
