Dress code: Cocktail. Now seeing this on any invite is sure to get most of us into a tizzy. It’s neither black tie nor business casual, but it’s the in-between that causes all the panic. Because no one wants to end up looking like the odd one out, especially when the dress code is specific. The difference is quite blurry, and it warrants some serious thought.

From the dress, and the clutch to the jewellery and footwear, cocktail attire for women includes some specific set of rules that can seem a tad bit difficult to navigate, but it’s obviously not impossible. So, here goes our list of dos and don’ts for choosing the right cocktail attire for your next wedding, business event or just a fashionable soiree that expects you to turn up looking like a model of sophistication and elegance.

The Length

Midis are your best friend. They’re just the right length to keep it casual but not too long to make you look like you’re dressed for the ballroom. The ideal length would be between the knee and ankles. Steer clear of minis and don’t go for something too clingy. A-line dresses, wrap dresses and sheath dresses are perfect for the occasion. Of course you can try other silhouettes, as long as they look chic and elegant.

Jeans? No Way!

Yes, we love our denims and love pairing it with a flirty top but for a cocktail dinner, anything denim should be avoided. You can go with the wide-leg trousers and suit up too. But tailored trousers are your best bet. They look elegant and can be paired with a sleek blouse or just tuck-in the ever-classic button-down shirt in a soft, flowy fabric. We’re thinking a deep burgundy or midnight blue button-down satin shirt. What’s on your mind?

Skirts or Jumpsuits? Yes Of Course!

A well-fitted jumpsuit and a skirt can be great too. If it’s a skirt, keep the length in mind and make sure you pair it with a pretty blouse to enhance your feminine grace. A mildly flared, A-line skirt, an accordion pleated or even a trumpet pleated skirt will work if you pair it with a chic blouse.

Clutch Matters

No oversized totes, please. Whatever you need to fix your makeup has to fit into a nice clutch. You can pick a nice shimmery, sequinned clutch with a metal sling. If you’re planning to wear the classic black dress, the clutch will add some much-needed colour and create a great focal point.

Jewel it Right!

A statement necklace or a stunning stone-encrusted pair of dangler earrings is just what you need to finish your outfit. Don’t overdo the accessories or add too many layers of jewellery. An elegant pendant necklace, a statement cuff bracelet and a matching pair of stud earrings should turn you into a style goddess, right away.

Nothing too fancy, too dramatic, too revealing, and too formal, remember this and you’re good to go. And yes, wear solid pumps with jewelled accents, but strappy flats and stilettoes will be great too. If you’re going to be walking around socialising, then pick the shoe height accordingly. And don’t ever compromise on the quality of your outfit, remember you’re aiming for polished and sophisticated, and every girl knows there are no shortcuts to looking like a queen.
